What are common dog skin allergies?
The most common skin allergies in dogs can be caused by fleas - also known as FAD - flea allergy dermatitis. The second most common cause of Atopic dermatitis is plants, pollen, dust mites, and mold spores.
What causes a dog to shed excessively?
Excessive shedding can be caused by certain medical conditions in dogs. Parasites, fungal infections, stress, and even sunburn are some of the more common problems that will cause excessive hair loss. Thyroid imbalances can cause inflamed skin and brittle hair as well.
How to stop excessive dog shedding?
Bathing and brushing your dog on a regular basis will reduce the amount of shedding. You should also try to reduce stress in your dog’s routine, and rule out any underlying medical conditions. The Skin and Coat remedy for dogs may prevent excessive dog shedding.
What helps with Miliary Dermatitis?
Miliary lesions are not actual flea bites but a manifestation of a systemic allergic reaction that leads to itching, painful red bumps and a rash. Because Miliary Dermatitis also causes skin inflammation which is pronounced as bumps, scabs, sores and ulcers, some of our customers have found that combining the Healthy Skin and Allergy relief remedy together with the Oral Health for Dogs remedy (which specifically targets painful ulcers called aphthous stomatitis) they were able to see faster and even better results than taking the Skin and Allergy relief remedy on it's own.
Can dog dermatitis cause hair loss?
Yes. Eczema, dandruff, and dog dermatitis are all skin conditions that can cause your dog to lose hair. If your dog feels uncomfortable or their skin causing irritation, they will scratch or lick themselves to relieve the discomfort. This can cause hair loss over time as specific skin areas become weak and their lovely fur falls out.
How do you treat dermatitis in dogs naturally?
At home you can provide relief for your dog by giving them an oatmeal, aloe, or epsom salt bath to reduce itching and inflammation. Diluted Apple cider vinegar can also be applied topically to skin lesions.
How to treat flea allergy dermatitis in dogs?
Many vets may prescribe antibiotics or even steroids to help with skin infections and break the cycle of scratching. We prefer natural methods that you can use at home. Such as giving your dog a cool bath with mild soap and combing out the fleas. Coconut oil applied to itchy spots, and chamomile and green tea bags applied to irritated skin areas.
How long does flea allergy dermatitis (FAD) last in dogs?
Flea saliva can cause an inflammatory reaction in animals. There are dogs that have an immediate hypersensitivity within 15 minutes, while others have a delayed reaction that takes 24 to 48 hours. Flea control and extermination is necessary to prevent dog FAD from coming back, and break the cycle of skin allergy.
What causes skin lesions on dogs?
Allergies, external parasites, fungal infection, bacterial infection, yeast infection, immune disorder, nutritional deficiency, and hormonal imbalance are the most common causes of crusty scabs, or skin lesions on a dog's back.
