Kennel cough is a highly contagious respiratory disease that causes inflammation in the throat and lungs of dogs. It is also known as infectious canine tracheobronchitis or bordetellosis.

A kennel cough is a dry, spasmodic cough caused by pathogens that inflame the trachea (windpipe) and bronchi (air passages into the lungs). After a coughing spell, dogs often retch and cough up a white foamy discharge.

Usually the bacteria that causes kennel cough cannot be passed along to humans. However, it can affect immunocompromised people, and infants. Therefore, it is best to keep at-risk people away from dogs who have had kennel cough in the last 14 days.

In order to prevent the spread of disease, your dog should be kept away from other dogs for at least 7 days AFTER their last cough or symptom, and for at least 14 days if no veterinary treatment or antibiotics have been administered.
